NEWS
SPLISH, SPLASH,
WE'RE MAKING A PLAN!
Youth Services starts planning the summer reading programs this month.
The theme for 2010 is "Make a Splash: READ!" Look for sign-up
times and the full schedule of events in our next newsletter.
DISPLAY CASE COLLECTIONS
Show off your favorite stuff in our display case! Do you collect horses,
water globes, rocks, or baseball caps? Whatever it may be, we'd love
to display your collection! Schedule a time at the Youth Services Desk.
THANK YOU TO JAZZMATAZZ BAND
To kick off Black History Month, an ensemble of Shaker High School jazz
musicians performed for families on January 31st at our Jazzmatazz.
Conducted by teacher Peter Suzuki, the band entertained the audience
with stories, solos, a little bit of history, and a lot of improv! A
giant thank you to these talented musicians: Tony Sun on saxophone;
Tim Coakley on drums; Alex Palazzo, guitar; Michael Roninson, bass;
and Brian Clayton on trumpet. Thanks, guys!
3 APPLES AWARD
Each year children in grades 3-6 nominate their favorite book, creating
a statewide ballot of 15 of the most popular titles. After reading or
listening to at least three of the nominated books, the children vote
to select one as their favorite. That book and its author are honored
with the presentation of the 3 Apples Book Award, and celebrations take
place across the state in school and public libraries. Pick up a ballot
in Youth Services to vote for your favorite title!
LEGOS
Let's go LEGOS! We'd love to offer a LEGO program, but first we'll need
some building blocks. If you or someone you know has LEGOS laying around
that you no longer use, please consider donating them to Youth Services.
It will help us get off to a great start!
BEST-LOVED BOOKS MADE INTO MILLION-DOLLAR
MOVIES
Boy, are we lucky with the line up for this season!
First, on February 12, The Lightning Thief arrives in theaters,
from Rick Riordan's thrilling series Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
It's the 21st century, but the gods of Mount Olympus and assorted monsters
have walked out of the pages of high school student Percy Jackson's
Greek mythology texts and into his life -- and they're not happy. Zeus'
lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect.
Next, from Walt Disney Pictures and visionary director Tim Burton comes
an epic 3D fantasy adventure Alice in Wonderland, an imaginative
and magical twist on some of the most beloved stories of all time. Johnny
Depp stars as the Mad Hatter and Mi Wasikowska as 19 year old Alice.
Then, Diary of a Wimpy Kid opens April 2, based on another wildly
popular series. Author Jeff Kinney writes about a wise-cracking junior
high school student in his cartoon illustrated books. The movie should
be just as comical!
To top it off, Steven Spielberg has just picked up the film rights to
39 Clues, sure to be a box office hit. The series, created by
Rick Riordan, tells the story of the most powerful family in the world
and the mystery surrounding their wealth and legacy. Each book comes
with collectible cards and an online adventure game, to give participants
a shot at a $10,000 prize! Check out the books and cards here in Youth
Services.

NEW! MY FAVORITE THINGS
Whats your favorite thing to collect? Maybe its
toy horses, or dinosaurs, or bears, whatever it may be, wed love
to showcase your collection! Schedule a time with us at the Youth Services
Desk.
